How to Use Your Portable CPAP System

How to Use Your Portable CPAP System

If you rely on continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy to manage your sleep apnea, you know how essential a good night’s rest is to your health. But the bulky machine isn’t exactly travel-friendly.

That’s why a portable CPAP system is an absolute game changer.

At Respacare in Bridgewater, New Jersey, our sleep specialists, Dr. Nehal Mehta and Dr. Prashant Patel, offer the latest in sleep apnea treatment, including the compact, travel-ready ResMed AirMini™.

Here, we explain how to set up and use this on-the-go CPAP system so you can rest easy anywhere.

About the portable CPAP system

The portable CPAP system is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a compact CPAP machine you can take with you. ResMed AirMini™ is the portable system we offer at Respacare.

Weighing less than a pound, ResMed AirMini is ideal for folks who travel frequently. It fits easily in your carry-on and doesn’t require distilled water, thanks to its waterless humidification system.

Despite its small size, the AirMini is an advanced system that features three therapy modes for customized care.

Unpacking the portable CPAP

ResMed AirMini is available in a variety of setup packs. The standard pack includes:

Depending on your prescribed setup, your pack may also include the waterless humidification system, nasal mask connector, or compatible masks. The items in your AirMini portable CPAP system depend on your specific needs. Double check your box to make sure you have all the items needed to manage your sleep apnea.

Setting up the portable CPAP

To start CPAP therapy, plug the supply unit into the machine and a nearby outlet. Then, connect the air tubing to the machine.

If you’re using the waterless humidification system, gently twist open the connector, insert the HumidX™ filter colored side down, and twist to lock. Finally, attach the air tubing to your mask.

Your therapy settings are pre-programmed at our CPAP clinic. However, you can connect your AirMini to the mobile app to make adjustments.

Using your portable CPAP

The ResMed AirMini portable CPAP machine is easy to use. When it’s time to sleep, press the start button and put on your mask. When you wake up, remove the mask and turn off the machine.

The system includes auto-start and auto-stop technology, so it begins working as soon as you breathe through the mask and stops when you take it off.

Using the app, you can view your sleep data, including the number of apneic events per hour, and fine-tune settings for better comfort.

Cleaning your machine

Keeping your portable CPAP machine clean ensures it continues to run smoothly every night. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for how and when to clean the tubing, connectors, mask, and machine. Replace parts as instructed or when you notice signs of wear or damage.

ResMed AirMini meets the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements, so you can use it on flights. Just make sure your seat has access to a power outlet since the machine requires electricity to operate.
